UK video game developers receive funding boost

Apr 19, 2024

The UK Games Fund (UKGF) has allocated £3 million in grants to 22 burgeoning video game studios to enhance their development projects and boost market readiness. This initiative is part of a broader Government strategy aiming to expand the creative industries by £50 billion by 2030.

Each recipient could receive up to £150,000 to help with hiring, securing publishing deals, and attracting further private investment. This funding boost, part of a newly established Content Fund, raises total Government investment in UKGF to £13.4m for 2022-2025. In 2023, the UK video game market doubled in value since 2013, reaching £7.8bn, with globally successful titles like Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto originating in the UK.

Culture Secretary, Lucy Frazer, highlighted the importance of this support at the London Games Festival, where she met with Content Fund winners and discussed the potential growth and job creation these grants facilitate.

Since 2015, UKGF has invested over £12m, aiding over 450 developers. It continues to offer up to £30,000 for early-stage prototypes and supports graduate talent through programs like DunDev and Tranzfuser. UK studios are encouraged to apply for the remaining funds from the £5m Content Fund.
